My 3 points twelfth graders are going to take the Module B bagrut next week. There, they have to write a short descriptive composition, so I have been reviewing adjectives that can be useful to them.
One activity I liked a lot is writing 30 adjectives on the board that can describe a person, event, place or object. I chose adjectives I was certain they had learned before. I asked students to make two lists in their notebooks. The first list includes words they know the meaning of, and the second list includes adjectives they don't know. I allowed them to help each other. Then, I reviewed the items with them and wrote the Arabic translation on the board. Afterwards, I asked students to try and study the items for 5 minutes and then close their notebooks. Then, I gave each adjective a noun and asked students to recognize which noun phrases make no sense or do not give a logical combination. For Example,
a respected dog
a colorful sky
an important sofa
a modest lady....etc.
Students were negotiating meaning, laughing or giving althernative answers. We discussed each combination by giving the exact meaning of the phrase.
This activity is:
1. very motivating and creates a humorous and active classroom atmosphere.
2. a vocabulary review activity that enhaces also writing skills.
3. increases the students confidence in their lexicon before the bagrut.
4. very success-oriented because in general every student can come up with at least one correct answer.
5. enables students to speak, listen and write in one lesson.
6. a lot of fun...
